In the golden years of audio, enthusiasts had the opportunity to listen to various equipment prior to making a vital purchase decision. Nowadays that is not possible with the scarcity of audio shops, Covid-19, and the cessation of listening opportunities at audio stores. Thus, a compelling reason for LP GEAR's comparative videos.
In this video, we offer for your review two top of the line and highly rated cartridges: LP GEAR The Vessel R3SM and Ortofon 2M Black cartridge. To eliminate volume bias, we adjusted the output volume to be the same for all cartridges.
Notes: The 2M Black sounds aggressively nuanced unusual for a nude Shibata. It is not displeasing, the absence of the Shibata glow is disconcerting and disappointing. It's like a premium steak that has more sizzle than prime meat. The R3SM on the other hand offers a slightly less detailed, yet more involving, warmer and musically rich version of the Ortofon 2M Black. This is the divine contradictoion. Less is actually more.
Historical attribution: The R3SM and all Vessel models were created for LP GEAR by cartridge grand master Okada San who created many luminous and highly-rated MC cartridges still coveted and valued today. Each Vessel cartridge bears his creative genius and musical force.
