Belarusian security forces have widened their crackdown on anti-government protesters, detaining a whopping 1,000 people at the main opposition rally on Sunday.
Belarus has been embroiled in unabated protests and police violence since Aug. 9 when Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian president of 26 years, claimed a dubious landslide victory at the polls.
Once seemingly on the brink of being ousted by nationwide protests, Mr Lukashenko has somehow managed to cling on to power despite the mounting discontent with his rule as well as staggering police atrocities which only angered the protesters further.
