After the US agriculture department reported a case of mad cow disease in California, the countries importing beef from US are worried. United states is the world's largest beef producer and a lot of the produce is for exports.
This was America's first reported case of the cow disease in six years. The US authorities assured consumers and global importers that there was no danger of meat from the California diary cow entering the food chain.
South Korea is amongst its major importers and the report of the mad cow disease will not stop south Korea from importing beef from America. This report has got South Korean retailers and consumers worried.
South Korean agriculture ministry announced on Wednesday, that they would inspect the imported beef until there were confirmed reports of the produce being unhealthy.
While the consumers are worried about the safety of this product, the retailers also anticipate a price hike in beef prices if the product from US were to stop being imported. Restaurant owners said that changes in beef prices would mean changes in the prices of good will be make the restaurant business tough to run. This is considering the especially high prices of South Korean beef.
