I greatly admired legendary broadcaster Lowell Thomas (1892-1981) and had frequent contact with him in the final years of his remarkable career. In the 1970s I recorded a number of his "Lowell Thomas Brings The News" 7 p.m. radio newscasts over CBS Radio. In this particular newscast Lowell Thomas marked his 45th anniversary of doing his nightly radio newscasts, of which he cites congratulations from around the world, including from Freeman Gosden (1899-1982) of "Amos and Andy" fame. In the news: President Gerald Ford signed into law an extension of oil price controls. Japanese Emperor Hirohito (1901-1989) was about to visit Ford at the White House. Justice William Douglas (1898-1980) returned to the Supreme Court for the first time since experiencing a stroke earlier that year.
