The ability to focus on a particular task is one of the most valuable skills one can have in today's world.
If you look at the modern digital environment most of us live in today it's something our human brain has never had to deal with in history.
We're literally being hit up by notifications every second of the day.
Whether it's social media, phone calls, texts or just clever advertising the fact is that there's a battle going on for our attention.
The reality is that it's our responsibility to educate ourselves on how to get control over our attention and time.
And the first step to doing so is looking around us and recognizing all the distracting elements.
Here are a few research studies on the topic:
Our attention span is now officially less than a goldfish based on a survey done on 2000 Canadians [ Ссылка ] & [ Ссылка ]
The age group most at risk is 18 - 24.
Another defeating statistic is that 65% of Americans sleep with their phone next to or on their bed. [ Ссылка ]
The first thing most people do after waking up is checking their phone and this can generate an enormous amount of anxiety and stress.
Looking more into it a study from the UK about 70% of emails will interrupt recipients within 6 seconds of arriving. And it took people 64 seconds to resume work after an email

This is not counting the lost flow state which can take 15 minutes to re-enter.
Key points and tools I use:
These are the things I personally use every day to get rid of distractions and spend time on what I want to do.
1 - Install an Ad blocking extension to your web browser.
I use Google Chrome to research content.
And the extension I have installed is called Adblock Plus. It basically blocks all the distracting Ads so I can focus on reading the content and doing real work.
2 - Removing Distractions from Social Media sites, specifically Facebook
If you're like me you probably spend a lot of time on Facebook.
What I found is that 2 extensions: Facebook News Feed Eradicator and FB Purity allow me to use Facebook the way I want to use it.
Instead of wasting hours scrolling through the News Feed these browser plugins will remove all the distractions.
3 - Block access to specific sites during the day.
There's an extension for Chrome called StayFocusd.
This basically allows you to block certain websites during a given period time of the day.
So if you find yourself wasting time on Reddit, Facebook, Twitter or news sites like CNN you can use this extension to block those sites.
Instead of having the option and wasting energy on deciding "not to go" the extension will make the decision for you.
4 - Customizing your phone.
Your smart-phone is probably what's distracting you the most out of all these things.
Tips:
- Remove all apps from your home screen except ones for work.
- Use silent mode all the time
- Put the phone on airplane mode in the gym, in bed and working
- Move social media apps into a folder on the 2nd screen inside of the phone
- Disable all push notifications from apps. You can always what's going on inside of the app.
Apps are designed to get you to take action and use the app more.
Take control back and direct your energy where you want it to go.
5 - Try the "Pomodoro Method"
Basically, it comes down to setting a 25 to 90-minute countdown for focused work.
Then after that time, you give yourself a 5-minute break.
During the focused time if you don't work you can't do anything else.
Summary:
Often we don't need more productivity tips. We just need to eliminate distractions from our life.
And the most productive people usually don't have any magical skills, it's just that these aren't interrupted when they do deep work.
