After the Great Depression in 1933, Congress started studying the causes of the Great Depression and the stock market crash. There were two Congress members, Glass and Steagall, who came up with two of the main causes-- Banks and Wall Street. Banks were lending money to buy stocks in Wall Street. Glass and Steagall split the two apart. The Glass Steagall Act was passed in 1933, and we had a relatively stable stock market after that.
Unfortunately, in 1999 the Glass Steagall Act was repealed. Now we see daily volatility. Elizabeth Warren and Senator John McCain have been cosponsoring the return of the Glass Steagall Act. It has bipartisan support. I don't think we're going to get stability back until we get the Glass Steagall Act back.
