We recently took a weekend trip to historic Port Townsend on the northeast corner of the Olympic Peninsula along the northernmost stretch of Highway 101 before it turns south to end in Olympia. It is a two-hour drive from Seattle (2.5 hours from SEA Airport), including a 30-minute ferry ride from Seattle to Bainbridge or Edmonds to Kingston (the latter of which we chose). Alternatively, you can drive over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which is farther and less scenic, but may save 30 minutes, depending on traffic and ferry boat wait times. There is also a ferry that docks right in Port Townsend, originating in Coupeville on Whidbey Island, which is more convenient for travelers coming from the north. However, from Seattle, this would require another ferry ride to Whidbey Island or a long detour to the north end of the island where there is a bridge. Most of the vehicle space on this ferry also requires a reservation, unlike the Edmonds to Kingston or Seattle to Bainbridge routes, necessitating advanced planning.
Port Townsend was settled in 1851, receiving large amounts of investment under the speculation that it would become the largest port on the West Coast of the United States. It grew rapidly until the late 1890s. There are many historic buildings from this period and little since, which make Port Townsend arguably the most picturesque town in Washington State.
Washington State Ferries (WSF) is part of the Washington State Department of Transportation. It is the largest ferry system in the United States and the second largest vehicular ferry system in the world, with 23 vessels plying 10 routes with 20 terminals serving over 10 million vehicles and nearly 25 million passengers annually. The largest ferry system in the world is the Istanbul Fast Ferries Company carrying around 50 million passengers annually.
The ferry boat featured in this video is the MV Spokane, with a length of 440 feet, capable of carrying 188 vehicles and 2,000 passengers, powered by four diesel-electric engines, totaling 11,500 horsepower. It was built in Seattle, WA, in 1972 and rebuilt in 2004.
