Alfredo Kraus Trujillo (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 24 de noviembre de 1927-Madrid, 10 de septiembre de 1999) fue un tenor y profesor de canto español. Es considerado uno de los mejores tenores líricos ligeros de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Su personaje más conocido fue Werther, de la ópera homónima de Jules Massenet.
Biografía:
Nació en la Casa de Colón de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. De madre española y padre austriaco, Kraus inició sus estudios musicales con lecciones de piano a los cuatro años de edad, y cantando en el coro de la parroquia Corazón de María, de los Misioneros Claretianos, a los ocho. Debutó internacionalmente en el Teatro Real de El Cairo en 1956 con el papel del Duque de Mantua en la ópera Rigoletto, de Verdi, y con el papel de Mario Cavaradossi en la ópera Tosca, de Puccini. Dos años después, el 27 de marzo de 1958, en el Teatro Nacional de São Carlos de Lisboa se presenta junto a María Callas, en una legendaria producción de la ópera La traviata que fue grabada. Siguieron debuts en Londres en 1959 (Lucía de Lammermoor), Milán 1960 (La sonámbula), Chicago en 1962 y Nueva York en 1966 (Rigoletto).
En 1967 debutó en el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires con La favorita, junto a Fiorenza Cossotto y Sesto Bruscantini, y regresó en 1972 para I Puritani, con Cristina Deutekom, y Lucía de Lammermoor, junto a Beverly Sills. Sus últimas actuaciones fueron en 1989 con un memorable recital y en 1991 con Werther, y en 1993 en Los cuentos de Hoffmann.
Fue un aplaudido intérprete de óperas como La traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor, La sonámbula, La hija del regimiento, Werther, Romeo y Julieta, Rigoletto, Lucrezia Borgia, El barbero de Sevilla, Los cuentos de Hoffmann, I puritani, etc.
El 5 de septiembre de 1997 Rosa Blanca Ley-Byrd murió en su residencia madrileña de Monte Príncipe, de Boadilla, por un tumor cerebral.

He was born in the Casa de Colón in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Born to a Spanish mother and an Austrian father, Kraus began his musical studies with piano lessons at the age of four, and singing in the choir of the Corazón de María parish of the Claretian Missionaries at eight. He made his international debut at the Royal Theater in Cairo in 1956 as the Duke of Mantua in Verdi's opera Rigoletto, and as Mario Cavaradossi in Puccini's opera Tosca. Two years later, on March 27, 1958, at the São Carlos National Theater in Lisbon, he performed with María Callas, in a legendary production of the opera La traviata that was recorded. Debuts followed in London in 1959 (Lucia de Lammermoor), Milan 1960 (The Sleepwalker), Chicago in 1962 and New York in 1966 (Rigoletto).
He received the Canary Islands Award for Fine Arts and Interpretation in 1985, and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 1991.
He was an applauded interpreter of operas such as La traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor, La sonámbula, La hija del regimiento, Werther, Romeo and Juliet, Rigoletto, Lucrezia Borgia, The Barber of Seville, The tales of Hoffmann, I puritani, etc.
In his last years he devoted himself to teaching, together with the teachers Suso Mariátegui and Edelmiro Arnaltes. He was the teacher of young performers such as the Venezuelan tenor Aquiles Machado, the Italian tenor Giuseppe Filianoti and the Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis. Finally and as an unprecedented honor in the history of a living artist, the auditorium in his hometown was called the Alfredo Kraus de Gran Canaria Auditorium.
On September 5, 1997 Rosa Blanca Ley-Byrd died in her Madrid residence in Monte Príncipe, in Boadilla, due to a brain tumor.
