Yarns can have an S-twist or Z-twist. This video explains the construction of three types of yarns that have a final Z twist and the fabrics these yarns create, as well as how fiber preparation can dramatically affect the fabric and stitch patterns. Single yarns, plied yarns, and crepe yarns are explained.

RESOURCES FOR LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE YARN IN YOUR HANDS

Tis is an excellent resource for learning what construction the yarn has. When a yarn is woolen spun, that is indicated in the description. Other qualities, such as plied, chainette, blown, crepe, etc. are indicated.

Ravelry is another excellent source for learning more about the yarn. Search for the yarn in the yarn database to find out how it's constructed, and then look at projects knit with the yarn, and read comments from people about their experiences working with the yarn.

Another excellent resource is your own stash. Examine what you have and compare yarns. Knit up swatches to see what the experience is like.
