I was lucky enough to not have a clue what it meant.
“Grandpa, when will the cat give birth?”
“In August”
“Will the war be over by then?”
“There will always be war somewhere, even when this one ends.”
Our war is over, we are alive. How are we living though? Has the economy recovered? Is there a fair work environment? Is the judicial system impartial? Are we sincerely striving for brotherhood and unity? Is propaganda a thing of the past? How are curated internet personas impacting our perception? Are there a plethora of leisure activities to engage youngsters outside of major cities? What happens to the mind in dire conditions? If we are a social species, don't we benefit from everyone being capable of contribution?
Direct your attention to the child without a stable home life slipping through the gaping holes of a wartime- and post-war society. Without clear direction in life and without skills to cope with the nature of existence, the child is miraculously still here: a grown man now. Thirty years after the Yugoslav wars, our protagonist takes charge of his life and makes the first step towards change: acknowledgement.
