Shibamata is well known, especially among older Japanese, as the birthplace of Tora-san, the protagonist of one of Japan's most famous movie series, Otoko wa Tsuraiyo (“It is tough being a man”). Outside Shibamata Station, a bronze statue of Tora-san and his sister, Sakura, who greets you.
The approach to Shibamata Taishakuten is the main street of Shibamata, and the quaint street is lined with stores selling dumplings, eels and other river fish. Some of the stores have a long history and add to the atmosphere of the street with their old-fashioned scenery.
At the end of the path is Shibamata Taishakuten Temple. In front of the Taishakudo Hall of Shibamata Taishakuten, there is a large 500-year-old pine tree. It looks like the shape of a dragon. The wood carving of Shibamata Taishakuten is also famous, as it is the same as that of the painter who built Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
Shibamata is located right on the banks of the Edogawa River and is home to the only surviving ferry in Tokyo, the Yagiri no Watashi.
To get to Shibamata Station, the gateway to Shibamata, take the Keisei Main Line from Keisei Ueno or Nippori Station to Keisei Takasago, and change to the Keisei Kanamachi Line.
