Boston harbor experienced a very special celebration on April 27, 2019. A visit by the Spanish tall ship Sebastian Elcano marked the beginning of a celebration of Spanish-led 500 years of exploration from 1519 to 2019, as she sets sail on its journey to circumnavigate the world. The two-year journey will follow Magellan’s in 1519. This modern ‘school’ ship will also be used as a scientific platform. In Boston Harbor, many other sailing ships worldwide joined in the arrival over the weekend.
The Spanish participation was co-hosted by The Explorers Club. Received by the Commander of the Elcano, Ignacio Paz Garcia, who spoke of Spain’s commitment to exploration by the Crown of Spain, President Richard Wiese presented Explorers Flag #1519 which was shortly thereafter raised to be flown aboard during the cruises. Other EC participants included Marcelo Mendez, UNESCO Ambassador Kitin Munoz, Bob Atwater, Angela Anton, and Will Roseman. Following an afternoon tour of the ship meeting officers and cadets, a formal evening including some 200 dignitaries was festive with good food, Spanish wine, and music.
Today, the Magellan-Elcano Expedition is without the fear of sea dragons and falling off a flat earth. The port of calls along the way will raise large crowds with celebrations. At sail, the Elcano collected water samples and measurements on a continuing basis in the oceans, seas, and ports for analysis. Visit’s to all ports will be under the Spanish and Explorer’s Club Flag #1519.
