The holidays are here and if you're as lucky as us, you're probably about to have one family celebration after another.
For a lot of people that means an excuse to binge on food and get wasted, even though their actual goal is weight-loss.
Since I don't want that to happen to you as well, today I want to talk about some of our favorite strategies we use to stay lean over Christmas and the holidays.
1. Prepare in advance! If you know there are going to be sweets, which have been hard for you to resist in the past, make a simple Keto alternative in advance and bring that with you! We have a very simple go-to Keto gingerbread cookie recipe for these occasions, which will be online tomorrow! We'll be bringing this to every single one of our family gatherings, so we don't feel like we're missing out when it's time for desserts and to share with our family. Our how about you bring a Keto cheesecake? Check out our recipe for that above if you haven't already!
2. What to eat - I'm guessing you probably can't control what food is going to be served, so just make sure you choose the best options that keep you on track for your goals. Have as much meat or fish as you want and add some low carb vegetables if you like. If you're going to over-eat, the best option is to eat more protein, followed by good fat sources. Just make sure you keep your carb intake low. Trust me, it's going to be worth it afterwards to be the only one that's not feeling bloated and gassy after the meal :)
3. Alcohol - Whenever you drink alcohol, your body has to deal with that first before processing any other source of calories, as it's toxic. So the extra drinks definitely won't help you on your weight-loss journey. If at all possible, drink no alcohol at all. If you do want a drink, keep it to as little as possible and choose options that are lower in carbs like dry white wine. You can also check out a video I made on the topic a while back (up here). My wife and I almost never drink and usually have a glass of sparkling water with some freshly squeezed lemon instead.
4. Oh no, I cheated! Ok, so you cheated, what now? First of all, relax. It's ok, we're all human. Maybe there was a special meal you really love and you wanted to enjoy it just this once. Just make sure it's worth it if you do end up cheating and you don't regret it afterwards. It also helps to keep note of how you feel after, so if it wasn't worth it you don't end up making the same mistake next year when you're in the same situation. If you notice you put on some weight after a meal as you ate more carbs than usual, the good news is that most of it is water-weight which you will lose again after a couple of days of Keto. Just make sure you get right back on track after a cheat meal. Don't go into 'f*** it mode' and turn the entire day into a cheat day or the week into a cheat week. The smaller the damage, the better and the faster you'll be able to get back on track.
Alright, so those were the strategies and thought processes we like to use around the holidays! I hope they will help you feel your best and reach your goals as soon as possible, while still enjoying this wonderful time. Before you take off, I wish you and your loved ones merry Christmas and happy holidays in advance!
And also I'm very curious to hear what kind of traditional meals you tend to eat around the holidays with your family. Please let me know in the comments!
