Throughout the Second World War, there were many different war crimes committed by the German Military. But following the Wehrmacht advances were the Einsatzgruppe, death squads who would carry out mass executions of civilians. One man who was placed in command of Einsatzgruppe A, (the deadliest group) was Franz Walter Stahlecker. Stahlecker was a senior member of the SS and he was trusted by high ranking Nazis.
Stahlecker's men were responsible for the executions of a quarter of a million people, but whilst serving inside of the Soviet Union, Stahlecker would be killed. It's believed he was ambushed by Partisans and he was shot in the leg, but this wound would be fatal.
