It is an important moment in the life of a singer when she is
able to confront the standard repertory. After years spent
studying theatre and music in Shakespeare’s England under the
guidance of musicologist Philip Brett, Jill Feldman recorded two
programmes of Henry Purcell’s music in 1992, reissued here as a
double CD.
Many of the ‘Ayres and Songs’ from Orpheus Britannicus are
connected to the English theatrical tradition. In the earliest piece
on this CD, ‘From Silent Shades’, and the latest, ‘From Rosy
Bow’rs’, we hear one theatrical tradition – placing the voice of
truth in the mouth of a madman. In the same way, we hear the
wisdom of Touchstone in As You Like It, of Feste in Twelfth Night,
and of King Lear’s Fool. This programme, superbly accompanied
by lutenist Nigel North, searches for that wisdom throughout.
In the Harmonia Sacra recording, Purcell’s sacred hymns are
interspersed with his complete organ works played by Davitt
Moroney, with whom Jill Feldman had collaborated ever since
their meeting in 1975 as part of Philip Brett’s ensemble at
Berkeley in California.

le répertoire standard est une étape importante dans sa carrière
! Après avoir étudié pendant des années le théâtre et la
musique dans l’Angleterre de Shakespeare sous la direction du
musicologue Philip Brett, Jill Feldman a enregistré en 1992 deux
programmes consacrés à la musique d’Henry Purcell, réédités ici
en double CD.
Nombre des Ayres and Songs d’Orpheus Britannicus sont liés à
la tradition théâtrale anglaise. Dans la première pièce de ce CD,
« From Silent Shades », et dans la dernière, « From Rosy Bow’rs
», nous entendons cette tradition théâtrale qui place la voix de
la vérité dans la bouche d’un fou. De la même manière, nous
entendons la sagesse de Touchstone (le bouffon) dans As You
Like It (Comme il vous plaira), de Feste (le clown) dans Twelfth
Night (La Nuit des rois) et du fou du Roi Lear. Ce programme,
superbement accompagné par le luthiste Nigel North, est d’un
bout à l’autre à la recherche de cette sagesse.
Dans l’enregistrement Harmonia Sacra, les hymnes sacrées de
Purcell alternent avec l’intégrale des oeuvres pour orgue jouées
par Davitt Moroney, avec qui Jill Feldman collabore depuis
leur rencontre en 1975 au sein de l’ensemble de Philip Brett, à
Berkeley en Californie.
