When low-life conman Tartuffe weasels his way into the life of Orgon and his family, no one is prepared for the chaos he will cause. Orgon, blinded by his admiration for the outwardly pious Tartuffe, is taken in. He happily consults Tartuffe in all his affairs, even offering the hand of his daughter, Mariane, whilst the conman slyly seeks to seduce Orgon’s beautiful wife. Will Tartuffe get what he wants, or what he deserves?
Tartuffe, banned in its day, still has the power to shock, despite our contemporary sensibilities. It is the presentation of unchanging human nature which has ensured it has amused and disturbed audiences in equal measure for over 350 years.
Established in 1929, Kelvin’s commitment to producing high quality theatre from its studio on the vibrant Gloucester Road in Bristol has made it one of the most respected non-professional companies in the South West.
Directed by Ralf Togneri, this version of Tartuffe is a modern translation by Martin Sorrell in association with Nick Hern Books.
