Hesperornis, a flightless, toothed bird swam and dived beneath giant mosasaurs in Late Cretaceous seas. A relative of the ancestor of all living birds, it was approximately 6 feet long and weighed nearly 20 pounds!
The first Hesperornis specimen ever discovered was found and named by the Peabody's O.C. Marsh and is in our collections today.
