When Shawn and I talked about doing a collaboration with Shakuhachi and Shodo, we both sensed that it had great potential to uncover something new. On the surface it seems like a natural combination, both Arts grounded in tradition and connected through Zen. For me it was a special experience to do this in Nara, using a special Sumi made with Nikawa binding glue from the bones of wild Nara mountain deer.
Staying at the Izayoisanso near Yagyu no Sato, we did the first part of the collaboration in a dark tatami room. Special lighting effects were created from red lanterns and an Edo style inverse tapered candle. In the past calligraphy was often viewed and painted in such light, and it added a new dimension of flickering light and shadows.
We began with the intro where the sounds of the Shakuhachi echoed and reflected the sounds of the Sumi being ground on the ink-stone. Even in the dim light it became apparent that the Sumi and the brush behaved differently than under bright lights. The Nikawa held and released the Sumi particles with an easy flow, producing beautiful chromatic effects like a halo around the strokes.
The second character was the ancient script for 相 (ai) meaning together, mutual, an ensemble as in our collaboration. It is composed of the radicals for tree and eye, as one looking at a tree and aware of our symbiotic relationship.
