Epilepsy is a disease of electrical activity in the brain. However, in epilepsy, that electrical activity starts to progress in an abnormal fashion and then can spread to areas of the brain that can cause disruption of function.
For many patients’ medication therapy can help control the seizures. But when drugs are not effective, surgery may be an option. One form of surgery is Laser ablation which is a less invasive procedure. A laser is used to pinpoint and destroy a small portion of brain tissue that’s causing the seizures. During surgery, doctors used Magnetic resonance imaging or (MRI) to guide the laser. Patients typically have a shorter hospital stay and recover more quickly.
