WEST GERMANY RACING
Historic Auto rally at Nurburgring.
The elite of automobiles, dating back 50 years or more, were in action on the Nurburgring circuit in West Germany on Saturday (17/08), on the first day of the FIA's two day historic Auto championship. The "old timer" grand prix brought together makes of Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Jaguar from 1931 to 1953. The drivers themselves were scarcely less colourful. Stirling Moss revived memories of the 1950s and '60s for British fans and Prince Leopold von Bayern performed in a Maserati with suitable dignity. The cars, usually only seen in museums, raced on a shortened track for just seven laps. Chris Mann of Britain came first in a Lotus (42). Second place went to another in the famous green of Lotus, Bruce Holford (43). Britain completed a clean sweep with Nick Mason, better known as drummer with the Pink Floyd pop group, took third place with a Maserati.
