* * *
It's not easy to find reviews of the gig as it was such a long time ago, but i did find a thread discussing the period 1989-93.
For some people, this is the worst of Dylan, and this comment stood out in my browsing:
"As far as I'm concerned, Bob's latest Renaissance started in 1989 with Oh Mercy, if he really was thinking about quitting in 1987 until his epiphany in Locarno. However, with some exceptions, I loathe almost all the shows he did between 1989-1993. I call it the "I Don't Give A Damn About Myself" portion of the NET. I see a guy in a gold lame shirt or a hoodie, drunk or otherwise under the influence, throwing slop around onstage and making fun of himself. It's unfortunate because he was blessed with G.E Smith during those years and that band had a ton of potential. It's rumored that he may have been going through another divorce during that time, but who knows. Maybe he was just trying to find his new self."
Another has this to say:
"I call this period-- perhaps starting a bit earlier (somewhere around the time he was in the Hearts of Fire movie) the Old Rock n' Roller period, playing greatest hits shows without seeming to care. Sometime in this period he covered the aforementioned song, hence the name, introducing it with the following words: "In case you wonder what happens to people like me, here's a song gonna tell you about it" [ Ссылка ]
Even though he messes up the words a couple of times, and really seems a bit out of it, I think it is one very, if not the most, honest performance ever by Bob Dylan.
"Go dye your hair, turn the music up loud
When it's time to go, you go down proud
You'll never be nothing, but what you are
You're just an old rock n' roller
Playing music in a backstreet bar"
On the other hand (as there always is), we have:
"A lot of good shows during this era. Setlists were creative and evolving... It was a time when you never knew for sure what you were going to get which added to the thrill and anticipation. I cannot think of a show in that entire time that I would consider "bad" or "poor". At least the recordings of the shows reveal he always managed to produce something beautiful or magical in every show."
and..
"In general and in my opinion: I love the rough, chaotic style of the '89 shows, lots of interesting covers and high energy night after night, though they're not for everyone. I have yet to hear a bad show from 1990, they are great to astounding, one of the high points of the NET. The fall 1991 leg is terrific. The late summer and fall legs of 1992 are profound performances with a distinct, terrific sound about them, great acoustic sets every night.
All in all, one of the great eras of Dylan's live career..."
