IVF essentially comprises of 4 steps. First step is called as ovarian stimulation, then comes the egg retrieval, then comes the fertilization and the growth of the embryos in the lab and the last is the embryo transfer, so in ovarian stimulation, why this is done? Naturally a woman produces only one egg in her menstrual cycle but in IVF we want to work with more eggs would like to get about 10 or 15 eggs. So the first step in IVF is to stimulate the woman with hormonal injections so that multiple eggs are produced in her ovaries. Following this when the eggs are nicely grown, we do a surgical procedure. So this is done transvaginally under ultrasound guidance and the eggs are retrieved out by passing a needle through the woman’s vagina. This procedure is done under anesthesia. So once the eggs are out, the husband’s sperm is taken, the eggs and sperms are taken in the laboratory, the embryos are grown and the final step is the embryo transfer where the embryos are transferred to the uterus.
