Cholinergic drugs - pharmacology | Pharmacological Actions of Direct-acting Parasympathomimetics
In this video, we have discussed the pharmacological actions of cholinergic agonists. cholinergic agonists or parasympathomimetics are the drugs that show actions like that of parasympathetic nervous system stimulation. cholinergic drugs are divided into direct-acting and indirect-acting drugs. In this video, we have discussed the direct-acting drugs' pharmacological actions. direct-acting drugs show their action by binding to cholinoceptors that are muscarinic and nicotinic receptors. These receptors are found on different organs of our body that include the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, eyes, GI tract, urinary bladder, glands, and nervous system. Cardiovascular actions of parasympathomimetics include lowering of blood pressure and bradycardia. bradycardia may alternate with reflex tachycardia. respiratory action includes bronchoconstriction. other actions of parasympathomimetics include miosis and lowering of IOP in the eyes, digestive activities are increased, promote voiding of urine, stimulate the secretion of glands, and nervous system effects.
The pharmacological actions of parasympathomimetics on the peripheral organs are mainly due to the muscarinic receptors activation and these are considered as muscarinic actions while the actions on the peripheral neurons and neuromuscular junctions are termed as nicotinic actions while the actions on CNS are considered mixed functions of both nicotinic and muscarinic origin.
