Karum Lake in Danakil Depression, Ethiopia is one of the hottest inhabited places on Earth. l
In the scorching sun, at temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius, people from the Afar tribe cut blocks of salt from the lake surface. The technique has not changed for almost 2,500 years - only simple tools are used: rods and iron axes. Blocks of salt are cut into even slabs and loaded onto the backs of donkeys and camels. Caravans led by Tigray herdsmen set off across the desert and mountains to Mekele.
