Up to ten thousand people marched through central London yesterday (16 March 2014) in protest at the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The march took place from Marble Arch to the Russian Embassy in Notting Hill.
Ukrainians living in London were joined by protesters from cities and towns across the UK with Ukrainian communities. We saw Manchester, Bradford, Nottingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Waltham Cross - thank you!
They were joined by British, Polish, Georgian, Chechen, Lithuanian, Belarusian, Russian, Venezuelan, Syrian, Jewish and Crimean Tartar supporters.
Speakers condemned Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Sovereign territory which was invaded by armed Russian troops at the end of February when the Prime Minister of the Autonomous Republic of the Crimea was forced to resign and was replaced by Russian-backed Serhiy Aksionov (whose party had received just 4% of the vote during the last democratically held elections). The referendum held in the Crimea yesterday is illegal with only the Russian Federation, Syria and North Korea recognising its validity.
