Mae Sot is a border town in Thailand with the majority of its population being Burmese migrants. Mr Zaw Htat, who fled Burma in 2004, co-built a migrant school here with a group of migrant workers, who hope their children to receive education but cannot afford the other better equipped schools.
Given that many parents cannot pay full tuition fees, Mr Zaw Htat has been unable to give salary to the teachers, including himself. There are 3 teachers at the moment but it needs 7 to educate all the 130 students.
We believe teachers should be paid decently, just like all the other workers, even though they are "illegal" migrants. Obviously, the education of migrant children would not be possible without these migrant teachers.
We want to act to support Mr Zaw Htat and his colleagues. We made this video, therefore, to let more people know the difficult situation of Burmese teachers in Mae Sot.
You can be part of this action by becoming a volunteer of his school or making donations. Please contact Mr Zaw Htat directly at zawhtat83@gmail.com
