Today's focus: TAKE TIME TO REST
Reflection on Gen 2:1-6
TEXT: Gen2:1-3 KJV
TODAY’S TOPIC: TAKE TIME TO REST
INTRODUCTION
Our study thus far on the text above shows that God sanctified the seventh day for RESTING, then REST could be seen in three perspectives. We have covered two of these and we will look at the third one here today. The three perspectives are:
(1) Eternal REST - The earth's Sabbath
(2) Emotional REST or rest in one's heart.
(3) Physical REST
We will be looking at physical rest in our study this morning.
We live in a generation that is characterized with beehives of activities; everyone is busy doing something or going somewhere. These are days that shops and stalls run twenty-four hours duty non-stop. (Running shifts). But looking at God's original plan, which is what Genesis chapter 1 and 2 represents, we will see that physical REST is originally designed for our physical bodies.
Operating any mechanism against the specifications in the manufacturer's manual has a fatal consequences. It is in this light we are studying the significance of physical REST this morning.
TODAY'S STUDY – TAKE TIME TO REST
When Jesus sent His disciples out to preach the Gospel and heal the sick, they returned with testimonies and they were rejoicing, perhaps expecting immediately, another commission, instead Jesus told them what they needed at that moment was physical REST. He stressed the significance of this, telling them that many messengers of God had come and gone too soon (dying prematurely) because they didn't take time to rest nor do they have necessary leisure or recreation time, not even regular and adequate food. This undermines the significance of PHYSICAL REST; absence of it leads to premature death.
Mark 6:30-31 NKJV
"Come aside by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” For there were many coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat."
It is a simple logic: THOSE WHO REFUSE TO TAKE TIME TO REST WILL SOON BE LAID TO REST. (They experience premature death). To this Jacob bore credence when he told Esau his brother that a grand skill in nomadic shepherding is to interlock beehives of activities with vacations and period of rest. He also added that overdriving oneself in various activities and even overdriving animals will terminate in untimely death. EVERYONE HAS A PACE HE CAN BEAR, PLEASE ESTIMATE YOUR PACE AND KEEP TO YOUR PACE. OVER-STRETCHING YOUR PACE LEADS TO INEFFECTIVENESS AND ULTIMATELY UNEXPECTED AND UNTIMELY DEATH.
Genesis 33:12-14 NKJV
"Then Esau said, “Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you.” But Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die. Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir.”
A similar counsel was given to Moses by Jethro, his father in law, when he paid a visit to him in the wilderness after the children of Israel crossed the Red Sea. He watched him sitting down from morning till night judging the children of Israel, so he counselled him that if he continued like that he would die prematurely. Éxodus 18:13-14, 16-19, 21-22
There is nothing super-human in claiming that you don't need a rest, our passage here says God rested on the seventh day. Jesus also rested when He was here on earth. He rested on a pillow during the storm on the sea Mark 4:35-38 KJVp
You need rest. Learn to give your body REST. If it had to demand it by force, that may be sickness or untimely death. Do not let it get to that. This was what happened to Epaphroditus who labored in the Lord’s service beyond his limits and his capacity. He fell sick and almost died even after much prayer from Apostle Paul. The prayer was not readily answered because his affliction was self afflicted in that he broke the simple law of nature that humans have to rest adequately and regularly too. Phil. 2:25-28
Epaphroditus there shows us one consequence of not taking adequate physical rest as and when due. We see that it can lead to physical ailment. Not all sickness are from Satan and his vcohorts; some are from physical exhaustion and lack of adequate rest.
Another consequence of not taking adequate and timely physical rest is mental exhaustion. This happened to Elijah.
