Latin-American dance arranged for piano by Eric Jupp
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This 1951 piece was a big international hit for the Brazilian composer, choro conductor and cavaquista, Valdir (sometimes Waldir, Waldyr) Azevedo (1923-1980), his other hit being the choro 'Brasileirinho'. 'Delicado' (literally 'Delicate') was peformed by Carmen Miranda in a vocal version. This piano solo arrangement, published in 1952, is by the British dance band pianist and arranger Eric Jupp (1922-2003) who later immigrated to Australia, and found fame there with his music to the TV series 'Skippy the Bush Kangaroo'. The soundworld of Azevedo's recording is amazing, and hard to recreate on piano. Jupp follows the recording pretty faithfully but adds in one or two figures, and changes the ending slightly. I have amended his arrangement to add in a g flat in the accompaniment to the opening melodic phrase—it is in the recording, and without it the unusual modulation in the next phrase sound even more bizarre than it is. In recording this I found the main challenge was to keep up a fast tempo and to prevent it subsiding into a habanera! You can read about the Baião rhythmic form here: [ Ссылка ] .
