Your baby may be ready to begin sleep training after the first three months of his life, which is really just a transition period from womb to the world. While he is sleeping in utero, he's used to being continually rocked, fed, and warm in the dark while always being close to mom's heartbeat. Up until birth, everything was regulated. Now, adjustments must be made to accommodate the outside world. Allow this period of time to be an introductory period for your baby, and allow him to get comfortable with his newborn sleep patterns. He will most likely need help getting (and staying) asleep during this newborn sleep stage. Any sleep training methods from rocking to swaddling to sound machines will be beneficial during this early time. Babies will vary in terms of how easy it is for them to go to sleep, ranging from drifting off easily and for long stretches to being very erratic and fighting the relaxation. Both examples, as well as a middle ground, are normal and healthy ends of the sleep spectrum. This will all change once he reaches 12 weeks and 12 pounds, during which they will be able to start learning how to sleep on their own. Taking two regular naps throughout the day will also become a relieving part of your routine.
