France has a long history at the Eurovision Song Contest, being present from the very first moment in 1956. France won the contest 5 times. In 1969, they had to share the title with Spain, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom however. In 1991, France tied for first place again, this time, with Carola from Sweden who won because of the new tie-break rule.
