There's no doubt that Pull Ups are HARD. However, you CAN learn to do them!
It takes practice, practice, practice and consistency, but with these variations, you can learn to do your first pull up and do them consistently!
Here are the variations we go over in the video:
-Negative Pull Ups (slow on the way down)
Do a big jump to get to the top of the bar, or step up onto a box to get to the top of the bar, then let yourself down as slowly as you can.
-Jumping Pull Ups
Give yourself some momentum by doing a little jump to assist you getting to the top of the bar. The key to progressing into strict pull ups will to be to jump less and less as you get stronger. Do the smallest jump you can to give you enough momentum to get to the top of the bar. You can also focus on the negative motion (going slowly on the way down).
-Dead Hang Pull Ups
Pull yourself up towards the bar as high as you can and then hold yourself in that position, contracting your lats as long as you. As you start feeling yourself drop, lower yourself slowly to the ground.
-Kipping Pull Ups (Swinging)
This is another progression to give you some momentum to get up to the bar. To start the kip, keep your shoulders active and swing your hips forward, so your feet go backward in a sort of "superman" position. Then, swing your feet forward and move your shoulders back into a "hollow body/rock" position. Practice swinging back and forth between those two positions.
Once you feel comfortable kipping, you can start using that momentum to help pull you up to the bar on the back swing. This is a more challenging variation that takes practice!
-Strict Pull Ups
Practice those four variations and work your way up to doing a full strict pull up! For strict pull ups, you will keep your body straight without swinging and use your lats and arms to pull your chin over the bar. Voila!
