Burnin’ and Lootin’,” a song that continues to resonate with protesters across the world.
According to Marley’s girlfriend Esther Anderson, the idea for the song began with a raid on the home of Joe Higgs, the “Godfather of Reggae” who mentored Marley and his bandmates.
“Weepin’ and Wailin’,” was the song’s original title later became Burnin n Lootin
Bunny Wailer shed light on the lines about “talking to the boss.”
The song also has lines which is ‘root man takin the blow’ revolved around people in Marley’s circle who’d begun to use cocaine.
Then there’s the very direct chorus. “That’s why we gonna be burnin’ and lootin’ tonight.”
Marley was issuing a warning. But Marley said the key was the phrase “burning all illusions.” Marley stressed he wasn’t focused on physical objects and places.
“burning all pollution.” “The line shows the cleansing side of street violence and shitty media propaganda.

Burnin’ and Lootin’
Ay, this morning I woke up in a curfew
Oh God, I was a prisoner, too
Could not recognize the faces standing over me
All dressed in uniforms of brutality
How many rivers do we have to cross
Before we can talk to the boss?
All we got, it seems we have lost
We must have really paid the cost
That's why we gonna be
Burnin' and a-lootin' tonight, oh
Burnin' and a-lootin' tonight
Burnin' all pollution tonight
Oh we're burnin' all illusion tonight (ay)
Oh give me the food and let me grow
Let the Roots Man take a blow
I say there's all them drugs gonna make you slow now
It's not the music from the ghetto, ay
Weeping and a-wailin' tonight
Weeping and a-wailin' tonight
(Lord, Lord, Lord, ay!)
Weeping and a-wailin' tonight (uh)
Weeping and a-wailin' tonight (yeah)
