Cotton is the number one fabric choice in our homes. More than half of Australians don't consider where of how cotton in their towels, bed linen, sofa covers and soft furnishing is sourced. Conventional cotton uses large quantities of chemicals and water and often leads to significant health risks in farmers , soil erosion and water scarcity. In fact, it takes approximately 20,000 litres of water to produce 1kg of cotton. That is the equlivilant of a small backyard swimming pool.
Over a decade ago, IKEA began taking steps to transform the way cotton is produced. Along with WWF and others, we helped set up the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which aims to make global cotton production better for the people who produce it, better for the environment it grows in and better for the sector’s future by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity.
