Fortica or Starigrad Fortress occupies a strategic position above the town, in the Dinara Mountain, commanding a sweeping view of central Poljica and the sea channel extending from Split to Makarska. It was built in the 15th century, primarily as a defense against the Turks and as a shelter from their raids. The idea was that, if the enemy occupied the town, its people would seek safety in Fortica. From there they would bombard Omiš with large rocks and chase away the enemy forces, at the cost of destroying their own town in the process. Fortunately, such a scenario never really took place.
