One of the biggest disappointments of the last console generation. There's a reason why this game was sold NEW for $5 less than a year after it came out. Metroid Other M manages to take a simple concept, exploring and uncovering a mysterious area all by your lonesome, and take a gigantic crap on it. Let's do away with free-roaming exploration and collecting items as "soft keys" to progress. Instead, let's be led down pathways, be told where to go (most times you can't go elsewhere) and be AUTHORIZED when to use aspects of your suit.
Let's do away with the mystique of the character of Samus Aran, giving us only brief memories and dialogue in Super, Fusion, and Zero Mission. Let's instead bludgeon the player over the head with two hours of cutscenes that are a bigger mindfuck than the movie Oblivion. Let's have Samus NOT EVER SHUT THE FUCK UP. Instead of actually accomplishing much of anything during this game, let's have everyone else BUT Samus do it instead! Even better, on your first playthrough, let's NEVER give the ability for the player to skip any of this drivel!
The game tries so hard to be Metroid Fusion without recognizing any of what made Fusion a good game. Fusion's soundtrack, most of which had been new to the series, added several notable boss and scenario songs that really put you into the mood. Other M's soundtrack, utterly and completely forgettable save the arrangement of the Ridley theme (an already-established theme in the series). The SA-X that you spent half the game cowering in fear of? Replaced by a "Deleter" (great translation by the way) whose identity you find out after he's been killed...by someone who isn't you, by the way. The bioweapon conspiracy of the Galactic Federation from Fusion? Completely recycled, and if this game is a midquel, WHY IN THE HELL IS ANY OF IT A SURPRISE IN FUSION?!
The gameplay is decent, but decent is about it, and nowhere NEAR good enough to save the rest of the game. Said gameplay is ruined by an awkward control choice to use the Wiimote with no extension whatsoever, and you're left with a clunky little action-platformer that nowhere in a million years could it replicate other Metroid games.
