This animation demonstrates the lignin builder generating a structure starting from superimposed monomers with correct linkages already present. The builder systematically identifies dimeric units, and then uses the known position of one of the two monomers to correctly place the second monomer. This happens sequentially until the structure is complete. Minimization thereafter fixes artifacts that might arise during construction, such as ring piercings.
