A rare opportunity to take a general public tour of a U.S. Navy DDG Arleigh-Burke class guided missile destroyer, DDG-116 USS Thomas Hudner, just two days before the Hudner's commisioning (12/1/18) at Boston Harbor's Flynn Cruiseport. I have seen Burke's produced at Bath Iron Works in Bath, ME since childhood, but have never toured one, so this was exciting. My colleagues worked on both the GE Aviation LM2500 turbines (4X) that power the ship, as well as the transmission.
According to a USN Press Release,
"[the name] Thomas Hudner [is] in honor of U.S. naval aviator Thomas Hudner, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in trying to save the life of his wingman, Ensign Jesse L. Brown, during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in the Korean War."
It is a Flight IIA tech-insertion DDG, the 66th DDG, and the second DDG built by Bath after a four-year hiatus (2010-2014) in keels laid due to Zumwalt production.
