Healey Willan was born in England and after graduating emigrated to Canada to take up the position of head of music theory at the Toronto Conservatory. He also worked in Toronto as an Anglican church musician. His chorale prelude on "Gelobt sei Gott" is in the classic tradition of British "tuba tunes", where the actual melody is played by high-pressure trumpets, beautifully accompanied by (ideally) a full swell. Willan increases the brilliance of the chorale here by prescribing that the tubas should sound in the 8' and 4' register. Even if the Rheinberg organ does not have a large swell division, the Trumpet 8' and the Clairon 4' of the Great come very close to the sound that Willen required.
Recorded on March 25, 2022 | Christoph Bartusek on the organ (Weimbs 2009 - 26 / II / P - after Gebr. Stumm) at St. Peter / Rheinberg.
