This is part three of a video series on how I painted the Mona Lisa using oils and glazes.
La Gioconda, known in English as The Mona Lisa, is a half-length portrait painting by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Considered one of the most famous paintings in the world, it was painted around 1503 and 1517. A hypothetical and personal reconstruction shows how the painting would have been seen by Leonardo and his contemporaries. This is the fourth part of a video series on how I painted the Mona Lisa. The artwork, the varnish, and oil colors at the Louvre Museum in Paris have darkened and yellowed significantly since the 16th century. As a result, the colors aren't as vibrant as they were when the painting was finished.
In this stage, for the monochrome underpainting and brush drawing, I used a brown tint by mixing a black and a red-brown for developing the hair and dress:
