The Priory of Our Lady of Thetford was one of the largest and most important monasteries in medieval East Anglia. Founded in 1103 it was the burial place of the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk for 400 years until finally surrendering to Henry VIII's commissioners in 1540. Wide ranging paranormal phenomena has been reported here including a chilling event which reputedly took place on a summers evening in 1987. It surrounded four friends who had an encounter with what is believed to be a medieval monk in the prior’s lodgings area of the ruins. So profound was their experience the story even featured on the television program Ghosthunters in the 1990s. The students claim to have witnessed the apparition of a monk (dressed in a black robe) in a glassless window pane on the first floor. The group then seem to catch the spirit’s attention as it glanced towards them before descending to the ground floor via a staircase. Then as the group approach, the spirit retreated back up the staircase. Thinking it was a “prankster in a Halloween outfit” the young men ran to follow the figure and attempted to ascend the same staircase only for the stairs to completely vanish before their eyes. A couple of members of the group were left on the floor suffering minor injuries. There is rumoured to be a tunnel - leading from King’s House (supposedly where King James I stayed) to the historic Bell Inn. From there a passage is rumoured to run north west to the ruins of the priory. This tunnel supposedly also links to a grade two listed building called Castle House and to the adjacent St George’s Nunnery.
