First responders pronounced 21-year-old Joe Pasqualini “dead at the scene” after he and his brother were hit by a drunk driver as they were walking along the street a few blocks from their home in 2009. Joe’s neck was broken in several locations and he was not breathing or moving.
EMS resuscitated and stabilized him but at the hospital, doctors recommended that Joe’s family discontinue life support. Joe’s family wouldn’t give up. His father, Jim, a CIA officer and a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, arranged for his son to be taken to John Hopkins Hospital by an air ambulance jet where the surgery team performed a miracle and reattached Joe’s spine to his skull.
