The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) has been surveying microscopic animals, plants and microbes the oceans for 90 years. This time scale has allowed scientists to track changes in the movements of plankton that fish and marine mammals depend on directly or indirectly. Over the years these measurements have been distilled into indicators that helps marine managers monitor ocean health and informs environmental policy. I discuss the use of the CPR survey in tracking a microbe with importance for human health using DNA methods.
