In 1956 the director Kenji Mizoguchi released his last film five months before his death. And of course that is this classic, Street of Shame. A brave and empathetic look at the world of prostitution without being paternalistic. Whether to earn money to keep their families or as a livelihood, the prostitutes at Dreamland deal with their profession as best they can. Mizoguchi creates a shared story that gives a voice to the prostitutes and takes their viewpoints into account to portray them as more than mere sexual objects.
