Controversial school names are being debated and replaced all over Canada.
The history and legacy of certain names can be harmful, according to advocates for name changes.
This video looks at schools from across Canada, including Dan Knott, now known as kisêwâtisiwin School in Edmonton; Langevin, now known as Riverside School in Calgary; and Prince Andrew, now known as Woodland High in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. It also discusses the multiple schools in Canada named after former prime minister John A. Macdonald.
To better understand why these schools’ names were changed, KN contributor Isabelle MacNeil spoke with many experts and activists, including Inuk advocate Tapisa Kilabuk, historian Sean Carleton, Indigenous educator Sara Mai Chitty and students Aimee Dorsey and Seth Helfenbaum.
