In this video we look at two long distance trains in Italy: The Frecciabianca and the InterCity on a round trip from La Spezia to Pisa and back again
.
The Frecciabianca is the lowest category in the Frecce scheme of Trenitalia. This is high speed train operating at 200km/h with long interstation distances and operated by electric Pendolino trains. The Frecce scheme includes two other categories of high-speed trains: the Frecciargento (250 km/h) and the flagship Frecciarossa (300 km/h). In this context the Frecciabianca is no longer economically viable. It is being slowly phased out and replaced by long distance trains that are subsidised…
…which is the InterCity. These are loco hauled trains comprising of ordinary Eurofima carriages, sometimes Grand Comfort carriages for 1st class. This service is subsidised by the Italian Ministry for Transportation and Infrastructure and shall provide long distance train services where high speed operation is not economically viable under free market conditions. The top speed of the InterCity is 200 km/h
