The city of Royal Oak is one of Detroit's more prominent northern suburbs. Located in affluent Oakland County it is surrounded by other vibrant, suburban cities like Troy, Birmingham, Ferndale, Southfield, Beverly Hills, Berkley, Clawson, Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge and Madison Heights.
Royal Oak has a large downtown core that features a wide variety of locally-owned eateries and retail shops. Beyond Royal Oak's downtown there is a large commercial strip that runs the length of Woodward Avenue (M-1) from 10 Mile Rd up to 14 Mile Rd. Royal Oak is the home of the Detroit Zoological Park and the flagship campus of William Beaumont Hospital. Most of the city's residents live in mature, immaculate neighborhoods of single-family homes that were built from the 1920s up to the 1950s. But as property values climb some old houses are being razed to make way for new homes.
