In this Sicily travel vlog I am going to show you one of the most incredible places in Sicily: the Saline of Trapani. But first and foremost, thanks to Flamingo Way for organising this tour for me. To book the same experience check out their website: [ Ссылка ]
Recognised all over the world as one of the most evocative and historically relevant places in Sicily, the salt pans are a real cult for the Sicilians, especially in the province of Trapani, where the two large positions of Saline are located in Trapani and Marsala.
Trapani's Salt Pans are a heritage site entrusted to the WWF and even today a large number of salt pans remain active throughout the year.
In Roman times, and throughout the Middle Ages, salt was a valuable commodity, also referred to as "white gold." This high demand for salt was due to its important use in preserving food, especially meat and fish.
Being so valuable, soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid with salt instead of money. Their monthly allowance was called "salarium" ("sal" being the Latin word for salt). This Latin root can be recognised in the French word "salaire" — and it eventually made it into the English language as the word "salary."
