A Syrian civilian was killed and and nine Syrian security personnel were injured when a mortar landed near the Russian Embassy in Damascus, Syria on Thursday afternoon (November 28), Russia's foreign ministry said. Another explosion went off nearby shortly after. No Russians were injured in the attack, which took place at around 1300 GMT, and the building itself did not sustain significant damage.
The Russian foreign ministry is condemning the attack, calling it an "act of terrorism", and that whomever is responsible should be punished. Such attacks have also been more frequently recently, the ministry added. The United States has also condemned the attack.
Rebels involved in the ongoing civil war in Syria have launched a number of mortar shells in Damascus in recent months, targeting embassies and the houses of seniors Syrian officials.
