STORYLINE:
Tired and defiant journalists at Russia's only independent nationwide television network held their posts through the early morning Wednesday after a takeover move by the state-run gas giant Gazprom.
The gas company's media subsidiary, Gazprom-Media, which holds 46 percent of the shares in NTV, ousted NTV's leadership in a shareholder's meeting Tuesday.
The company contends it is the controlling shareholder because another 19 percent of NTV's shares are frozen in a court dispute.
Journalists from NTV, Russia's only independent national television, believe that legal fight for NTV is fight for democracy as well.
NTV has been criticised by the Russian government for its coverage of war in Chechnya and a satirical puppet show which makes fun of President Putin and his ministers.
Their offices have been raided by masked police, in past months, an attempt to force its work force into submission, the pretext was a tax dodging accusation that drove NTV's owner Vladimir Gusinsky to flee the country.
President Putin is increasingly coming under the scrutiny of western powers for his undemocratic methods in dealings with free press.
