On Valentine’s Day in 1900, two students and a teacher from a girl's boarding school disappear during an outing to Hanging Rock, a mystical rock formation in Victoria, Australia. In this scene, the school's stern headmistress Mrs. Appleyard (Rachel Roberts) is intent on breaking the will of a headstrong but emotionally vulnerable student (Margaret Nelson) who has not been allowed to attend the picnic with the others.
